A Historical building

The house was built and leased in 1811 from John Ormsby Vandeleur by a milling merchant, Bartholomew Glynn. In 1890 his grandson fashioned the house that remains today. A bar and grocery store was installed on the ground floor with living accommodation on the upper floors. The Clancy family were the first to run the newly installed bar and grocery store.

Following the Clancy’s, the Ryan family took up residence in 1901. The family ran a very popular establishment – continuing to operate the bar and grocery store.

Their daughter Katherine Ryan was an opera singer who travelled the world. On her return home, she would sing to a crowd in The Market Square below. After 79 years serving the public the bar and grocery store closed in 1968 not before a performance by The Dubliners in 1963.

My family acquired the house in 1989. It was 2010 before the restoration to save this unique and historic house commenced. This transformed the house into two heritage holiday homes which conserved the past, while discreetly installing 21st century comforts.
