The bow elbow chair is many names; sometimes called a captain’s bow and sometimes, a smoker’s bow. Or it could be a bow or even an elbow chair.
This one has a seat board made from an Ash tree that fell in a storm here a few years ago. The dark band in the seat board is the beginings of heart-rot in the tree. Quite inocuous and quite c ommon in native Ash trees.
A couple of years ago a young man enrolled on one of our two day country chair-making courses. He made a chair like this and shortly after, he started a New business in Clare as a chair-maker.Â
Cheap chairs imported from Vietnam or Cambdia will always sell, but good hand-made chairs will always last. And last. And last.

Although this type of bow elbow chair is complicated, it is achievavble for the complete novice in only two days (sometimes with a little help)
