Details of Chair 1555
A William IV Mahogany carver
Details: The traditionally stuffed seat of this carver is fixed directly to the chair frame rather than a loose intermediate frame.
The maker did not skimp on the wood he used and there is an unusually deep curve in the back rail which is cut from then solid, not bent to shape.
The scroll motifs in the carved detail of the back rails and the shaped arm supports are a carry-over from the neoclassical which in turn was influenced by designs that were re-discovered in ancient Greece and Rome.
The seat which is now covered in faux leather will be re-covered in a fabric or leather of buyer’s choice.
