Details of Chair 1523
An early 19th century Rosewood Open Armchair (Fauteuil) in the Louis XV style
Details: Rosewood was fashionable for quality furniture from about 1810 until mid-century and it enjoyed a brief comeback towards the end of the nineteenth century. The characteristic Louis XV back on this fine chair leads to the conclusion that it is from the earlier Rosewood period. The carving of the floral motifs and ribbon-work is of the highest quality. It needs re-upholstering but I haven’t opened it yet – there might be a clue to the maker’s identity inside. There is no doubting the quality; the wood-work is in original condition with a rich mellow hue and good patina finished in a light rub of French polish. The sprung seat will be finished to purchaser’s preference with either a nailing strip or a gimp tape to match the new fabric.
