Details of Antique 6501

Victorian Square Grand Piano

Details: A rare example of an instrument type that was superseded by the upright piano. – No definite date but apparently it is early Victorian, probably 1841
The sound is softer and thinner than an upright and it was most suited to the home rather than auditorium.
According to the label pasted on top of the sound-board, it was supplied by Marcus Moses, Westmorland Street, Dublin.
There is no maker’s plate but it is apparently a English instrument, probably John Broadwood & Son.
There is a stamped serial number, 10798, on the sound-board and each part of the case is stamped with the number 431.
The range is 6 ˝ octaves from F – A. – One pedal.
The panel above the keys is Rosewood and the rest of the case, mahogany with a flame veneer applied to the sides.
Brass-work (hinges and castors) are impressed, “Tim.y Smith & Son, Makers, Birmingham”
