Details of Antique 6525

Victorian Marble-top Mahogany Wash-stand with tiles depicting Aesop’s fables

Details: A solid mahogany base in good original condition, with turned legs on brass castors.
The mahogany-framed splash-back which is fixed to the marble top contains tiles depicting four of Aesop’s fables: Aesop’s fables were translated into English and published by William Caxton in the 15th century but most modern versions are believe to come from the translation of Rev George Fyler Townsend (1814 – 1900). Although the popularity of Aesop as moral guidance for children has waned in recent years, they were very popular in the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries.
