Details of Antique 6520

Late Georgian Mahogany Demi-lune side table

Details: Mahogany was first imported from Cuba into the United Kingdom for furniture making about 1730 as a substitute for increasingly scarce French walnut. The Cuban supply dried up relatively quickly (from 1760) hence the term “Spanish mahogany” which refers to woods originating from the Spanish Caribbean islands.
Unfortunately some antique auctioneers are prone to describing any mahogany as “Cuban” but in general it’s possible to tell the Caribbean mahoganies from the African variety because it’s heavier and the true Cuban variety is distinguishable because its quite brittle.
I can’t say that the top of this demi-lune is Cuban mahogany but it’s quite identifiable as, and very typical in appearance to Caribbean. The figure in the wood is, sadly, a thing of the past because mahogany of this sort of quality just isn’t obtainable any more. The table is more than a full semi-circle unlike the true semi-circle that one might find in a table end – the “centre is actually 2” inside of the back edge. French polished to a bright reflective finish that best shows off the grain and figure of the wood.
