Regency Demi-lune marble-top Pier Table

Details: The proper description of pieces such as this is often problematic and confused; Is it Pier table, Serving table, Wash stand, Hall table or Console table? By a process of elimination, traditionally, hall tables are usually higher than dining table height but at 71 cms (28”) this is lower. Console tables are usually made with a mirror and quite often the legs curve backwards so as to fix to the wall or rise from a minimal base. Given the choice of describing this as either a wash-stand or a pier table / serving table, I would opt for the latter – its just too showy for a dressing room. So, the answer is this is a pier table (i.e. it was made to sit against a wall pier, between two window openings, in a large room) and I suspect the reason for the marble top is in its intended use to serve drinks or food from. Heat and alcohol both have devastating effects on French polish because it softens with heat and its soluble in alcohol. Obviously, for modern use, there aren’t many houses with ballrooms these days but fortunately marble-topped pier tables make excellent hall tables.
